Hair like the horses

We want horse hair.

Yeah I said it. No, not fake hair (I didn’t name this post "Hair like the beyonces"), but long, lustrous, soft, wild, whippin’ in the wind (curly) hair. Hair like this chick:

Above is Sabina Karlsson, Afro-Swedish model and harborer of amazing tresses. Though genetics probably play the biggest role for her lustrious, "horse-like" hair, I'm determined to go back and give an old favorite a try...Mane n' Tail Original Shampoo and Conditioner.

Yeah, I said it. I'm going on the Mane n' Tail challenge (and I'm dragging Amal in it with me), baby!

Over the course of my whole life, I have heard so much hype about this horse shampoo and conditioner that I couldn't help but be seduced into using when searching for a new regime for my curly locks. I'm a recovering product junkie, and after using hundreds (yes hundreds) of different products I've realized that less is more when it comes to my hair. Yes, I could shampoo, steam, heat, treat, and deep condition my hair into oblivion, but all that might do more harm than good. Additionally, I remember using the conditioner at a friend's house a while ago and thinking that it worked a lot like Redken's All Soft conditioner, only that you get 3x as much for 1/3 of the price and you can use it as a leave-in. So my new regime will be:

  • I will try Mane n' Tail Shampoo on wash days just as long as it doesn't dry my hair out, but I'll never give up my staple, Creme of Nature Detangling Shampoo (green label). It makes hair feel like silk in the shower and it doesn't have Sodium or Ammonium Laurel/Laureth Sulfate in it (sorry, my chemistry background is showing)...I just can't give it up.
  • I will definitely use the Mane n' Tail conditioner for conditioner washes, and as a leave-in before styling. I think I'll add a little bit of avocado oil in the conditioner though, just for some extra shine and moisture.
  • My hair tends to get really dry after sleeping on it, so I'm going to try to moisturize before bed with the Mane n' Tail as a leave-in AND a scalp oil...I really want to try an Indian, Ayurvedic oil like amla oil (it has purported hair growth properties and henna to keep my hair dark and shiny) but I hear it's smelly. Nice smelling hair is a must for me, so I don't know if that particular oil will fly. I'll research some other options and post on it later...
  • I'll finish my bed routine by covering my hair with satin or silk. Or maybe I should just get a silk pillow case...
  • I will continue deep conditioning with Lustrasilk's Shea Butter Cholesterol Conditioner. I think the shea butter counteracts all the protein in it, so my hair has never come out hard with this stuff. It smells nice too :-)
**The product junkie in me is dying to try Aveda's Sap Moss Nourishing Concentrate as a deep conditioner. I once read that Girlfriend's star, Persia White uses it and loves it so it might get added into my lineup. Maybe...

So that's it! Real simple- wash and condition with Mane n' Tail, deep condition once a week, moisturize with Mane n' Tail and a little oil at night, and cover hair with satin before bed.
