Conversely, when the weather is warm and life seems playful and grand, no one spends an inkling of time optimistically setting goals for their life come summer’s end. As a usual subscriber of the aforementioned philosophy, national holidays such as the Fourth of July usually don’t mean more to me than a day off from school and a free barbeque; however this holiday I spent some time seriously reflecting my own life choices and decided to gain my independence from mistakes in my past.

With the Fourth of July as my New Year, I’m determined to be a better person this go-round, which means seriously curbing some of my worst habits:

1. Poor money management
2. Extreme procrastination (of the self-sabotaging variety)
3. Little-to-no follow through with important contacts/professors
4. Extreme self-indulgence/low self-discipline

As a generally private person, it feels a little weird writing about my flaws for an infinite amount of strangers to read however; I think my tackling of these issues can provide a new framework for the topics I discuss on this blog. In other words, it’s likely you, the readers, might be going through some of the same things so it behooves me to dive a little deeper than the usual musings of hair and fashion. Make no mistake—there will always be insight on hair and fashion on this chunk of the internet, but now I’ve decided to include these topics as well:

~Personal Finance and Economics (stocks, savings plans, additional income ideas)
~Organization Ideas
~Reading Recommendations
~Whatever else suits my fancy

I’ve always been a little leery in discussion heavier topic on this blog because I’m young, thus I never exactly felt “qualified” to discuss things that seemed “bigger” than me. As a young Howard woman however; I am constantly growing and changing and I think it’d be a disservice to my own representation if I limited myself to just the lighthearted stuff.
So in a nutshell, it is my “New Year” resolution to be more as a person…expect see more on this blog.

You Know We Loved It! Sex and the City: The Movie

It is no question that Sex and the City has become a cultural phenomenon for American women of all backgrounds and ages. The show ran its course during my mother’s tirade to ban everything she deemed “inappropriate” (which was somewhat justified after discovering my older brother’s affinity for late night, cable softcore…) so I never could get my SATC fix without being greeted by Comcast’s handy-dandy parental code block. College, however; was a whole new ballgame in terms of living on my own terms, so it wasn’t long before SATC, pizza for breakfast, and school-night sleepovers quickly crept their way to the top of my priority list. What started as late night hunting for random episodes to watch on Youtube, ended up as full out “Sex and the City Nights” complete with full seasons of SATC on DVD via the local Blockbuster, my closest friends via their respective dormitories, and our own crummy relationship stories to talk about all night via the Howard University dating scene. Needless to say, it didn’t take long before I was caught up on the comedic melodrama that is Carrie Bradshaw, and subsequently took a trip to NYC this past weekend to watch 6 years of HBO genius culminate before me on the big screen.

Sex and the City: The Movie was amazing*.

As Slate.com critic put it best, I had to see the movie “to know how the girls are doing, what's happened to them in the four years since I last joined them at brunch and what in the name of God they're wearing.” I found out all of that and more as “Big” drama ensued, but I’ll refrain from speaking on all of that as not to spoil the contents for anyone who has yet to see the silver screen’s biggest (female) orgasm. Instead, I’ll gush over the only other aspect of the show that placed the brand into epic female notoriety…the clothes!

With the haggard looks of Miranda a thing of the past, Samantha actually implementing the notion of tastefulness, Charlotte stepping out of the “stepford wife” look, and Carrie skyrocketing her Monolo Blanik savvy into the stratosphere…visually a buffet, the movie was a fashion addict’s cardiac arrest and arrival at heaven.

*UPDATE: I really didn't wish to comment on the plot of the movie, because (1) I was more preoccupied with the fashion and (2) I had complicated feelings about the actual message the movie sent out, even thought I ADORED the movie for what it was. Luckily, the folks over at the blog By The Way Betch... summarized how I felt about the movie to a tee. Check it out...

I really love this look. Always whimsical, Carrie takes an upscale approcah to casual chic with a leather, transitional colored brown, envelope clutch. Do you know how long it took me to find a vintage envelope clutch! Uh, I almost died when I saw this on screen...to be Carrie Bradshaw...

This is an amazing dress! This was actually Charlotte's bridesmaid dress, but I'd wear it to any formal event that'd have me...ooh, with red lipstick and a cobalt blue clutch...heaven!

Carrie and these shoes! I can't get enough! I love love love the gladiator heel trend sweeping the fashion scene right now, they make the bridges of your feet look amazing. For true working girls, I saw some similar one's at Nine West, but I still lust after the notion of being able to afford a designer pair one day...

From Sex and The C...

One of my favorite looks for the movie, Carrie pays homage to her signature flower fetish with this gorgeous and cutting edge white dress with my favorite shoes as described above. These scene is particularly cute because it shows the "new breed" of the female foresome in their versions of the "Carrie" outfit, passing the original Carrie on the street, only to fawn over her dress. I love it!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://mgbeauty.blogspot.com/2008/06/you-know-we-loved-it-sex-and-city-movie.html' title='You Know We Loved It! And over 3 months since we promised to quit are unannounced “vacations” from this blog. We know and we’re sorry. Between finishing final exams, starting our new jobs, getting acclimated to our new living situation, developing new business ideas, traveling on the weekends, finding new guys to date, paying parking tickets, taking out the garbage and heating up my ramen noodles (and oh, how I love chicken flavored ramen noodles)…things can get pretty hectic. Still, that is no excuse for alienating our readers, as we still need to find time to share all of the relevant (and irrelevant) information that got this blog its buzz in the first place. So we’re really going to try to keep this baby updated from here on out…

To express our profound sincerity, below is a peace offering for all of those who love ‘90s R&B, bamboo earrings, Dark n’ Lovely relaxer kits, Michael Jackson samples and good ol’ black girl vocals. My natural journey wasn't originally based on the desire of having one, but after pouring over endless pictures of women with majestically big, curly 'fros, I was dead set on having one myself.

While out shopping at the mall, I ran into this window display at that Gap:

My heart ached as I stood in the middle of the aisle-way, gazing upon foot after foot of curly afro hair behind the glass. "One day, that will be mine," I mouthed to myself. "One day..."
Well, the day isn't exactly here yet, but let's just say I'm making good on my promise:

Amal, on the other hand, has already reached "big @ss fro" status (damn her, but I'm not hating, lol):

Men (and my Mom) think we're crazy for having such a goal in the first place, but I know many women share our dedication because both Amal and I get stopped on the street about our hair constantly. It's not unusual for me to be scribbling shampoo and hair routine recommendations for a random stranger who had questions about my hair while riding on train. To achieve either my or Amal's hairstyle featured above, the secret is...(drum roll please)... a braid-out! Yes, Amal and I both have different textures and different lengths, but a braid-out gives us each our respective looks without much hassle. The key is to avoid using a blow dryer to stretch your 'fro out (or down), since such heat causes major damage and may inhibit growth towards big@ss'froness. Try our method for yourself instead:

Wash and condition hair

With damp hair, apply favorite moisturizer (mine is Elasta QP's Mango Butter), and plait hair into about 6-8 braids*, making sure to twist (not braid) the last inch or so of hair

Let air-dry overnight (or sit under a hooded dryer if in a hurry)

Wake up, take braids out, and enjoy a day of looser, curlier hair

Before bed the next night, moisturize, plait hair in 5-6 fat braids, and leave the last inch or so completely unbraided

Cover with a silk bonnet or scarf (or sleep on a satin pillowcase) and go to bed.

Wake up the next morning, take braids out, pick and finger comb as desired, and enjoy a loose, crinkly, stretched out, big @ss 'fro!

*Remember to fashion your plaits in the direction you want your hair to go. If you want hair that hangs like Amal's, create a part and braid down. If you want hair that goes all round your head like mine, braid in all directions.

Not Just For Sandwiches

Ever since I was little, I have hated mayonnaise of every variety. With the bland taste, extra creamy texture, extreme thickness, and egg by-product, mayonnaise was NEVER to see the inside of my hamburger buns. Strangely enough, however, it is because of those characteristics that I bought my first jar yesterday and used it for none other than my hair. Introducing: HAIR MAYONNAISE!!!

So I have to be real here; I have always been just as skeptical about hair mayonnaise as I was with the edible kind, and my hair has gotten along just fine up to this point without me having to use it. The problem surfaced when one day, I stumbled across Tracee Ellis Ross' hair care regimen (I know, angels began singing in my head too) and my product junkie jumped out. Lately I've been plagued by dry hair (my own fault really, I refuse to tie my hair up at night) and I was on my way to CVS to get my staple, Lustrasilk's Shea Butter Cholesterol Conditioner. To my dismay, the downtown CVS didn't have it in stock seeing as the "ethnic hair" section was minuscule. (See what happens when you don't go to CVSs in the 'hood?) They did however, carry Hair Mayonnaise, and instantly I had visions of Joan hair. I quickly grabbed a jar and headed home.

I proceeded to use the product as expected; I washed my hair, loaded the stuff on, brushed my hair with my fake Denman brush, braided it into plaits, piled my hair into a plastic bag, then sat around for about an hour and a half. I brushed and rinsed my hair out in the shower and the results were pretty amazing. My curls fell together so nicely, and each strand was smooth and strong to the touch. It felt so smooth and healthy, I felt too guilty to diffuse it and wear a "wash and go", so I plaited my hair wet, let it air dry overnight, and wore a braid out the next morning.

I still find mayonnaise pretty gross when ingesting it, but for hair? Well...bon appétit!

UPDATE: Upon further research, I've read and heard of people using regular food-grade mayonnaise with their own concocted oil blends for their hair. I am a huge kitchen chemist; chemical engineering is my major and both me and Amal are trying to launch our own hair product company. That said, I cannot see myself slapping Miracle Whip on my locks. I'm not knocking anyone who does, but I don't understand how one would remove the smell from their hair, and the thought of sticking my hand in a big ol' tub of Hellman's best utterly makes me cringe.

But, that just makes me a weirdo with a strong, unexplained aversion to mayo. For the rest of you, if you want to save money or simply just like creating your own stuff, here are some Youtube vids from Canadian Lioness on creating and using homemade hair mayonnaise. No, not fake hair (I didn’t name this post "Hair like the beyonces"), but long, lustrous, soft, wild, whippin’ in the wind (curly) hair. Hair like this chick:

Above is Sabina Karlsson, Afro-Swedish model and harborer of amazing tresses. Though genetics probably play the biggest role for her lustrious, "horse-like" hair, I'm determined to go back and give an old favorite a try...Mane n' Tail Original Shampoo and Conditioner.

Yeah, I said it. I'm going on the Mane n' Tail challenge (and I'm dragging Amal in it with me), baby!

Over the course of my whole life, I have heard so much hype about this horse shampoo and conditioner that I couldn't help but be seduced into using when searching for a new regime for my curly locks. I'm a recovering product junkie, and after using hundreds (yes hundreds) of different products I've realized that less is more when it comes to my hair. Yes, I could shampoo, steam, heat, treat, and deep condition my hair into oblivion, but all that might do more harm than good. Additionally, I remember using the conditioner at a friend's house a while ago and thinking that it worked a lot like Redken's All Soft conditioner, only that you get 3x as much for 1/3 of the price and you can use it as a leave-in. So my new regime will be:

I will try Mane n' Tail Shampoo on wash days just as long as it doesn't dry my hair out, but I'll never give up my staple, Creme of Nature Detangling Shampoo (green label). It makes hair feel like silk in the shower and it doesn't have Sodium or Ammonium Laurel/Laureth Sulfate in it (sorry, my chemistry background is showing)...I just can't give it up.

I will definitely use the Mane n' Tail conditioner for conditioner washes, and as a leave-in before styling. I think I'll add a little bit of avocado oil in the conditioner though, just for some extra shine and moisture.

My hair tends to get really dry after sleeping on it, so I'm going to try to moisturize before bed with the Mane n' Tail as a leave-in AND a scalp oil...I really want to try an Indian, Ayurvedic oil like amla oil (it has purported hair growth properties and henna to keep my hair dark and shiny) but I hear it's smelly. Nice smelling hair is a must for me, so I don't know if that particular oil will fly. I'll research some other options and post on it later...

I'll finish my bed routine by covering my hair with satin or silk. Or maybe I should just get a silk pillow case...

I will continue deep conditioning with Lustrasilk's Shea Butter Cholesterol Conditioner. I think the shea butter counteracts all the protein in it, so my hair has never come out hard with this stuff. It smells nice too :-)

**The product junkie in me is dying to try Aveda's Sap Moss Nourishing Concentrate as a deep conditioner. I once read that Girlfriend's star, Persia White uses it and loves it so it might get added into my lineup. Maybe...

So that's it! Real simple- wash and condition with Mane n' Tail, deep condition once a week, moisturize with Mane n' Tail and a little oil at night, and cover hair with satin before bed.

Do you have any experiences with horse shampoo and conditioner? Heralding these women as the second coming given their looks, talent, or sense of style, it can be pretty confusing when trying to understand just what this "it" factor is. Though I've long disagreed with the notion that girls like Ashley Simpson or Vanessa Hudgens deserve such a title, there is no denying the "it" factor as it pertains to MTV's Sweet Sixteen alum and Harlem's own self proclaimed "rockstar", Teyana Taylor.

I must admit, I've been following Teyana Taylor since her debut on Sweet Sixteen back in early 2007, so this post has been in the making for quite a while now. Though I normally write off the Sweet Sixteen girls as arrogant Paris-Hiltons-in-the-making, I was struck by Teyana's look and "I'ma do me" attitude. In a world where 6 years olds contemplate dieting and strive be "hot", I'm all for confident young women and Teyana has my respect for that alone.

Additionally, the girl's just doing her thang! First and foremost, her style is sooo quirky and cute! If you couldn't tell before, this blog is most certainly curly hair biased, and her 'fro is nothing short of amazing.

As to whether it's really all her hair- I think it is, but I understand it make sense to wear fake hair when in the spotlight as not to ruin your real hair from over-styling. Word on the blogosphere street is that she may or may not wear lacefronts. I say, who cares?! It's clear from her MTV episode and Myspace pictures that her hair is big and curly by nature, so there's no need to investigate all of her photo shoots for "hair authenticity". Because I'm a hair junkie, I happen to know that she uses the Matrix line of shampoo and conditioner, and that she uses Hair Milk by New York-based Carol's Daughter. As for achieving this look, I couldn't tell you exactly what she does, but I obtain similar result when I style my hair with a (1) a (fat) twist out, (2) a blow out and small barrel curling iron, or (3) roller set with flexirods. Next time I do this look myself, I'll be sure to post comparison pics ;-)

Beyond big hair, Ms. Taylor has quite the style too! Known to wear off the wall clothes myself, I'm definitely diggin' the skinny acid washes, candy colored sneaks, gold jewelry, and Barbie style dresses. This girl really knows how to juxtapose femininity with bad boy gear, which is really refreshing amongst all of the hoochie mamas in the music biz right now. I know this is an odd statement to make, but I love how even though Teyana is kinda busty (like me), she keeps it controlled and never runs the risk of looking "over exposed" with her style choices. As a young woman with a smaller frame but larger chest, I know what an absolute battle it is to find clothes that fit without having chi-chi and cha-cha (my Dad's nickname for them, lol) hanging out. I digress (another post, another bra, another time), but Teyana is definitely someone to look towards in that regard. Below are a few looks that I can't wait to rock this summer as inspired by Teyana

Beneath the looks and the clothes lie Teyana's wealth of talent, as she was signed to Pharrell's Star Trek label before the age of 16, choreographed Beyonce's Ring the Alarm video, was features in Trace Magazine, and helped usher in the Harlem's own dance craze "Chicken Noodle Soup". Like I said, the girl got a lil' talent in her! Her new album is soon to be released, and her new single Google Me is already gaining some ground. Though "Google Me" is not my favorite song in the world, I do think it's cute and will fit nicely among the ranks of Lil' Mama and Ciara. Teyana's other track, Traffic Stop, is my 'ish however, as I've been playing it for a couple of days now.

So, if you're reading Teyana Taylor, you've sparked my interest. I can't wait to see what you come out with next...

Make Me Sexy: The Man Edition

We all know that behind every great man is a great woman; however, encasing every great looking man should be a great looking outfit. Sadly, this is not always the case as too many of the world's finest men drown their looks in a sea of ugly/dirty/frumpy clothing. For instance, I have this friend, we’ll call him *Steve, who is very handsome and has a lot going for him lifestyle and personality-wise. The problem with Steve, is that he can’t seem to get his fashion game together. Too often, I have seen him gleefully nightclubbing in awful shirt, tie, and light-washed jean combinations, while going to work the next morning in oversized dress shirts and clunky, black, square-toe shoes. Don’t feel too bad for Steve though, I’ve already agreed to accompany him shopping so that we can end this madness once and for all. For the rest of you men (or women with men who can’t dress), this guide is for you. Below, I have listed the top 10 men’s fashion essentials so that Steve or any other guy clueless in fashion can make the effort to start dressing themselves appropriately.

*is not his real name, duh

My biggest rule for men is to quit worrying about wearing things too tight or looking “gay” (and by the way, gay men have impeccable style so looking like them might not be such a bad idea); proper fit implies that either your clothes are expensive or that you have enough money to get them tailored properly. If you have expensive looking clothes, then you probably are successful. If you are successful, then you are desirable to the opposite sex and women will flock to you like Joan Rivers to a plastic surgeon. This is all you are after anyway. Please, dress the part.

1. The Fitted Polo- a fitted, cap sleeve men’s polo is not only a CLASSIC, it’s perfect for summer given the lightweight material. I always put men in cap sleeve, short sleeve polos because it eventuates the overall slim cut of the shirt and shows off those fabulous biceps. Hey, to be good-looking means showing off something worth looking at, no? The one featured is from Penguin ($69), but you can pick up a classic no breast pocket version from HUGO at Nordstrom (1400 South Hayes Street, Arlington, VA, Pentagon City) for $75

2. Skinny Tie- Skinny ties are back, baby! Since the keywords for the new fashion movement are “slim”, “sleek”, “trim”, and “sophisticated” it’s no surprise that slim ties have made such a sexy comeback. Both Banana Republic (3200 M Street NW) and J. Crew (3222 M St NW ) have come out with there own slim tie collection, and Macy’s is offering a white and black selection for under $20. Choose one that’s about 3 inches wide, at it’s widest point as not to go too slim. The point made is that wearing ugly ties is no longer an option.

3. Loafers- a chic pair of loafers not only is a great casual alternative to sloppy sneakers, you look put together without going over the top with formal dress shoes. And get this...in the summer time you can wear them sockless!

4. Great pair of jeans- This really should be first on the list, as a great pair of jeans often makes the whole outfit. Choose a medium to darker wash in a bootleg or straight leg cut and you will be well on your way to sexy. The number one mistake men continuously make is buying jeans too big! Jeans need to have a close (not tight) fit. So if you are a medium size man....uh, you need to go for a medium size jean. Your shape (and any woman checking you out) will greatly appreciate it.

5. Casual Blazer- Nothing dresses up a dude's otherwise alright outfit quicker than a casual blazer. Pick one with a light weight, shorter length, and roll up the sleeves to give off that “I’m so cool, I just threw this on” look. Try Zara (1025 F St NW, Downtown) or Club Monaco (3235 M St NW, Georgetown) for modern cut blazers at lower prices.

6. Slim Button-Down Collar Shirts- For heaven’s sake, would you men stop buying your dress shirts so big?!?! Not only do you end up looking like a used car salesman (and even if that is your profession, you should never dress like it), but they hide how fabulously in shape you are. Hit up Banana Republic, Macy’s (1201 G St NW), Loehmann’s (5333 Wisconsin Ave. NW), or The Men’s Store at Saks (5333 Wisconsin Ave. NW) for slim cut oxfords. If you can only afford one, go for a white one because it’s the most versatile with both casual and dressier outfits, and it’s extremely breathable in the summer.

7. Casual athletic shoes- these are essential to the American lifestyle because you can’t wear dress shoes to the grocery store and you can’t wear your beat up trainers on a date. You must find a happy medium, also known as a neutral colored casual athletic shoe. I am the queen of these types of shoes because I’m too girly to go balls out in NBA worthy Nike trainers, but I’m too realistic to attempt wearing heels everywhere. Thus I’ve been properly introduced to some great styles buy Puma (featured), Adidas, Diesel, and even Converse (Chuck Taylors are always classic), and I suggest that every man get on the bandwagon. These types of shoes look polished with jeans, blazers, or both, and extremely wearable in the summer.

8. Lightweight sweater/cardigan- Since the key to looking put together is to, well, put lots of nice clothes together, a simple cardigan or sweater is like the functional cherry on the outfit cake. They’re relatively cheap, and surprisingly enough, you can find a nice, basic assortment at the otherwise over-the-top Urban Outfitters (737 7th St NW). Pick one in a solid neutral color, and wear it over t-shirts on cool summer nights, or over a button-up at a dinner date. In other words, you’ll wear the hell out of it, I promise.

9. Brown Dress Shoe- Now don’t get me wrong, black dress shoes are always tasteful and will always be in style. Brown shoes, however, add a little “umph” to suits and trousers and look great with navy, grey, and tan/khaki colors. Go for longer, slimmer styles (no clunky square toes allowed) when finding a pair. Remember, this is not something to skimp on price-wise (unless of course, you find a pair on sale). Stick with trusted classic brand names like Kenneth Cole and Cole Haan- not only will they look great for years, they’ll be comfortable for years as well.

10. Fitted Tees- No, these are not the white tees you buy in packs at Wal-mart and wear when mowing the lawn. These are crisp white (and solid colored) tees that fit amazingly and are made of good quality cotton and fabric blends. This is important not just when wearing the tees alone, but when wearing them under button-ups and ties also. The better the fit and whiter (read: cleaner) the tee, the better the dress shirt over it looks. When wearing graphic and/or long sleeve tees alone with jeans, the same rules for fit and fabric quality apply. Find inexpensive v-neck and crew neck (vary it a little) sets at American Apparel and Express (50 Massachusetts Ave. NE, Union Station).

This here collection of fashion know-how is more than enough to get any man on the right track. Remember that neutral colors included brown, black, tan, gray, and white, and that variations of blues, reds, yellows are great to start a basic color pallet. Additionally, none of these looks have to break the bank if you are familiar with stores like Loehmann's and Filene's Basement (1133 Connecticut Ave) and sales at Nordstrom and Macy's. If you don't believe me on any of this, check out the holy grail of Men's Fashion information at GQ Magazine online (this issue features a naked Adrianne Lima if fashion weren't incentive enough). This slideshow pretty much validates all of the information featured here. Now go forth, and dress yourself!

Do you Badu? I was perusing Clutch Mag, and came across this article on the greatness that is Ms. Badu. Not only is she clearly back in a big way with her latest album, New Amerykah (my favorite song is "Telephone"), she's back with her signature look that I have long since been in love with.

What an amazing 'fro, no? She's definitely on my "holy grail" list of amazing natural women. This look is particularly inspiring for me because it represents my look for this summer. I know it's kind of weird to have your summer look planned out ahead of time, lol, but I spend so much time dreaming about skin bronzer, jersey dresses, and pink toe nail polish during the winter that I can't help but have a complete style game plan when the weather breaks.

So, when I look at this picture, I'm most enamored with her big, fluffy, coiled hair, bronzy makeup, and wooden jewelry. The whole look screams the "I dream of Africa" trend that's been sweeping spring fashion magazines for a while now. To achieve Erykah's hair look with your own locks:

Start out with wet natural hair and apply your favorite styling products. Make sure to choose something that will promote softness and sheen- nothing that will make the hair stiff.

Continue to section the hair in large, fat plaits, being careful to leave 1-2 inches of the sections unbraided.

Once you've plaited your whole head, spray a little of a water based product (liquid leave-in conditioner, perhaps) to the loose ends of each braid and coil them tightly around your finger.

Now that your whole head is plaited and coiled, allow the braids to air-dry overnight or under a hooded dryer/diffuser.

Once hair is dry, carefully unbraid each section but DO NOT separate the curls/waves just yet.

Once entire hair is dry and unbraided, take a pick a lightly pick the roots of each section, making sure to position and finger style your 'fro as you want it.

Now you can go back through your new do and separate your curly as you like, making sure that the end coils stay intact as shown in the above picture.

To complete the look, (if in DC) you can head downtown at the corner of 13th and F Sts NW and haggle with the Nigerian street vendors for some inexpensive African-style jewelry while making sure to head past Georgetown Sephora to pick up some bronzy makeup. Throw on a pair of boho sandals, and you'll definitely be channeling your inner "Badu".

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://mgbeauty.blogspot.com/2008/03/do-you-badu-we-do.html' title='Do you Badu? Not to be mistaken as something that someone would want to have, the hussy factor is the uncanny ability to draw unwanted mean looks and cold stares from older women because they assume that because you are young and attractive, you are a hussy.

This may seem to be a ridiculous notion to some, but I can assure you that my friends and I have experienced this on more than one occasion. The scene is usually somewhere nice- a formal or informal affair where older couples are in attendance, and I usually manage to get in on a whim because I know someone who has something to do with the event. Because I am young, I rarely have a date other than another female friend to bring and because I'm a college student, I rarely have enough cash to splurge on an dressy outfit, so I find something nice and inexpensive from a store like Loehmann's and I make sure that it plays up my best features. Next, my friend and I will head on out to the party or whatever we're attending...only to be gawked at by half the women over 35 in the room.

Now, this is not to say that all older women hate on us given our age, it has just been my experience that I always seem to encounter unwarranted meanness from a handful of insecure, middle aged women. This has happened at parties, at lounges, at formal events...even when meeting one of my favorite female singers! When I complain to my mother about this happening over and over again, she nearly always chuckles and says that a lot of this has to do with our youthfulness being seen as a threat by these women. This really perplexed me, because lifestyle-wise, there are so many things to look forward to and to be secure about as a woman gets older. Neither I nor any of my friends have experienced the joys of married life, children, property ownership, a career, or just full-fledged adulthood. If anything, it's the 20-somethings who should be jealous. However, since looks seem to be at the root of this hussy factor issue, I figured why not pay homage to black beauties who have maintained their fabulosity beyond the age of 35? The following 7 black women put me and all of my young friends to shame:

Image Via Yahoo TV

1. They smile and run around in floaty white dresses while that God-awful "feel the rain on your skin, no one else can feel it for you..." song plays in the background, as their unnaturally shiny, perfect curls bounce to the beat. Some gorgeous, chocolate skinned man always runs his fingers through the model's caramel colored locks as she turns around and beams at him with that blindingly white smile. The model's model friends all have equally beautiful, frizz-free, "natural" hair, and they all dance together at their sunshine-filled picnic until the commercial fades out. Like I said, usually, I hate those Pantene hair models because usually, my natural hair looks nothing like theirs...usually...except for today.

From Perfect Hair day

Today was a most certainly a "best hair ever" day. Since my hair is extremely curly and generally has a penchant for huge, "out-to-there" afro looks, I choose not to fight with it and let it do it's thing. Thus, I've long since mastered braid-outs, twist-outs, flat twists, coils, and any other mechanical means of making my hair (sort of) lay down. These methods, however, almost always require overnight preparation and deep down, I've longed for the day where I could emerge from my morning shower and easily will my curls to hang downward in under 15 minutes. Feeling brave enough to revisit this battle, I did a little research on Google and came across "A Curly Girls Guide to Loving Your Locks" on AOL. It's a ten-part, quick yet effective slide show by Lorriane Massey, co-owner of curly hair company Devachan, on taming curly hair. Now I have to admit, at first I was leery on taking any of this advice because the demonstrations were done on and seemed to be geared towards Caucasian curly hair. Though white men and women may battle ringlets that are just as tightly coiled as African American curls, black hair is still generally more coarse than white hair and I had a hard time believing any hair advice that worked for white women would be as effective on me...that is until I actually tried it.

So, my morning went like this:

Instead of washing my hair with shampoo, I did the "no-poo" method (as coined by Lorraine Massey) of rinsing my hair with a light conditioner only. My fav for this purpose is Suave's Tropical Coconut Conditioner (as recommended by fellow blogger Mane & Chic)

I got out of the shower with soaking wet hair and DID NOT dry my hair yet. I dried myself off with a towel, but nary a fabric came near my wet curls just yet.

To my soaking wet hair I liberally applied 3 products, (1) Cantu Shea Butter Leave-in Conditioner, (2) my homemade leave-in concoction as inspired by the recipe from Motown Girl, and (3) Carol's Daughter's Hair Milk (I am actively looking for a new alternative to this-- it's a bit heavy).

To my soaking wet, now product laden hair, I took paper towels (you can use a t-shirt as well) and blotted my hair dry. I would just grab sections of curls by the side (no scrunching) with the paper towel and squeeze the water out. Once my hair was damp, I took random curls and twirled them with my finger to make them more defined.

To my damp hair, I applied plastic, duck-billed clips the the ends of my curls to weight them down and stretch them as the dry (butterfly clamps work too). Per Lorraine Massey's suggestion, I took another paper towel sheet and sprayed it with my concocted leave-in and sat it on top of my hair so that those pesky frizzies couldn't crop up.

Next, I lotioned up, got dressed, did my make-up and all that jazz in order to give my hair some time to airdry. Once there was nothing left to finish but my hair, I gently dried it with my blowdryer and diffuser attachment on low speed/medium heat (the duck-billed clips were still in place).

Once dry, I took the clips out, shook my head, finger styled, and left the house to enjoy my perfect hair day!

Finding the Home Front (and it's Neighborhood Cafe)

There is nothing more grown, more alluring, more sophisticated, more likely to solicit Carrie Bradshaw moments (and we all want those kind of moments) then having your own apartment. I mean, come 'on! We can't claim to be real Material Gurls while living it up in a 5 x 7 dorm room. How I long to light candles over my bathtub as I lay and soak, without worry of my R.A. writing me up as an insubordinate potential fire starter. In fact, I long to simply lay in my own bathtub without worry of catching decade old athlete's foot on my backside. Amal and I just want our own space. And we want it now.

So, over the last week or so, Amal and I have been aggressively perusing Craigslist for leads on various apartments, flats, and other rentals near (but certainly off) campus. For those of you who have ever filtered through hundreds of housing post, you know how the listing game goes. Every house you come across is "charming". "Spacious". A "great buy". But no listing details the real facts. Do the neighbors with pets fail to 'pooper scoop' on their morning dog walks? Is the landlord cheap and frequently M.I.A.? Are the parking <strike>Nazis</strike> enforcers extra strict around these parts? And most importantly...how's the neighborhood cafe?

When it comes to a great cafe spot... I. Do. Not. Play. Seriously, there is nothing I enjoy more than a bangin' soy chai tea latte, my own booth and/or window seat, my MacBook, and cafe food. The reigning favorite for me has been Mocha Hut west of 13th St. on U. They have the most de-li-shi-us turkey bacon, cheddar cheese scrambled eggs, and arugula this side of the Mississippi! (Are we, uh, on a particular side of the Mississippi...?) Like......I've been known to skip class for it, lol. When it comes to food, I have a vicious inner fat child and I've never spent more than $10 total while satisfying my greed at Mocha Hut. Better still, they serve breakfast ALL day and have FREE (and GOOD) poetry nights on Thursdays. Most importantly, however; the employees know my name. They care about my day and why it's been a week since I've dined there. They never hassle me for holding tables they always smile, and it's just a wonderful establishment. I think even if I found an apartment back home in Detroit, I'd still take flights back to DC just to bask in the splendidness that is Mocha Hut. It's just that kind of place.

However...I know that some days, it will rain, the Metro won't run, one of my shoes will break mid-step, and I'll be forced to go to the cafe closest to home. That known, my new neighborhood better house a cafe of equal caliber to my #1. Otherwise, I ain't moving there. If you think I'm playing, ask me why I won't move to Dupont? Not to say that Dupont is a terrible area or that I actually have enough money to choose not to live there, but for the sake of the argument, I was not pleased with Teaism, Cafe Luna, OR Soho Tea & Coffee. I think Teaism is a great idea, and I can't speak for the Penn Quarter or Lafayette Square locations, but no one here was friendly. Not the employees and definitely not the patrons. Those behind the counter acted as if they were utterly repulsed to answer any questions I had about the tea. There was little room to sit, everyone looked at me and my date like we had 3 heads each (was it the 'fro?) and I felt very isolated the entire time there. Needless to say, we quickly drank our tea and left. As for Cafe Luna, the menu claims to serve breakfast all day, but quickly list exceptions on nearly 3/4 of the breakfast menu. When my visiting mother questioned the waiter as to why we couldn't have the Belgium waffles at 4:05pm, he became slightly indignant. Hello!!! For one, this is my mom, and secondly, why they hell can't we have have waffles? The menu does say "all day"...To be good sports, we ate there anyway and left thoroughly unimpressed. I can't even remember what I ate, and I had to look up the name of the spot just to write this article because I had long since forgot it. Cafe Luna is just a regular old establishment that screams "eh". I saved Soho Tea & Coffee last because, well I have no choice but to use a certain word to describe it, and after reading this post over at the blog Free Silver, I fear female castration from anyone who may care to comment. But I must speak truthfully...Soho Tea & Coffee is so...well...pretentious. Don't hurt me, but really, it is. Me and a friend trekked all the way over there in the rain just to see what the hype was about and I almost laughed out loud. I just felt stupid sitting there. Yes I ordered a soy chai tea latte and yes, I brought my trendy white MacBook, but no. No I was not waiting for some sexy stranger to come over and ask to buy me another drink, and no, I wasn't trying to seem deep or brooding, or any of those things. But the place just seemed so....ugh. I (over)payed for my drink and skedaddled back to Mocha Hut.

If you can't tell by now, I am certainly most serious about my cafes and our new apartment will not be close to a lame one. As a college student with papers due every five minutes, I need my joe. And as a closet bohemian with a passion for art, ambiance, and all things sensory I need a good cafe that just flows. Ya know?

P.S. - Big Bear Cafe opened up not too long ago and although I haven't had time to thoroughly check out the place (or read all the related articles on gentrification...apparently some bloggers feel the cafe is a mascot), I did sneak in for that salmon panini of theirs and it was heaven. I plan to be on the prowl very soon...

Vacation Over

So if there is anyone in the world who was a regular reader of this blog until now...sorry for taking so long to update. We were just working exta extra hard to make sure that our blog was easy to navigate and easy to view. If you're reading now and never read before...welcome!!!!

As you may have noticed, we have several new features on this site. One of the more exciting one's is that we have subscription service now! Feel free to submit you email or send our feed to you favorite RSS reader. On the right, we now have a "Broadcast" section where we'll be featuring video we capture while out and about, as well as interesting footage of other stuff we love. Currently in our broadcast section is NYLON Magazine's interview with Ally Hilfiger during fashion week...hey, we love NYLON Mag, we love NY Fashion Week, and Ally seemed to be pretty alright post-"Rich Girls" (google it). Last but not least, we have a new and improved navigation bar (I feel so geeky being excited about this) with a contact tab that sends emails directly to us. So, with this new design, I feel like we're all good to go. Which means no more "extended vacations" on our part. We promise for real this time.

~Courtney

About Us

If you are new to the shenanigans of Material Gurl, you are probably wondering who we are, what exactly are we doing in blogosphere, and why are we doing it. Even though we'd like you to stay a while and go through most of our previous blog post until you get the gist, we've decided to be dolls and provide this handy "About" blurb for you. So...

We (Courtney and Amal), are to Howard University students studying in various chemistry related fields with the hopes of becoming beauty industry moguls. Lucky for you, you won't hear a lick about the chemistry part. We love love love love hair, beauty, fashion, music, shopping, DC, NYC, Howard, and everything else you'll read about us throughout this blog. Instead of following the textbook case of entrepreneurship and wallowing in intense chemical formulas hoping that one day, it'll all pay off, we've decided to be a bit more proactive in our journey by fusing the things we know chic, sophisticated women (i.e. "Material Gurls") love to do along with all the boring stuff that comes with starting a beauty brand. In other words, this blog is a vehicle for us to experience and share all of the fun stuff that goes into becoming beauty entrepreneurs, as well as be a place for us to rave about life in DC and get other related ideas off our chest.

We know you'll enjoy this blog just as much as we love writing it.

Review of Judith Dominican Salon

Gurls, my greatest accessory is my hair. I love to switch it up. Sometimes it is curly and other times it is straight. With my hair Jackal and Hyde personality, I need people who could deal with each hair style needs and desires. When I want that healthy, shiny, with bounce straight look, I go to the moderately price and professional Judith Dominican Salon. First, they give me a great wash and a great deep conditioner with aloe vera. This aloe vera treatment contains many nutrients and vitamins that nourish my hair. Next, they put my long, curly, and coarse tresses under rollers and then I sit under the dryer for an hour. After this, they blow the curls out with a blow dryer and a round brush. However, my only two complaints is that the blow dryer burns my scalp a little and that it takes a while for my curls to fall right when I wear my hair natural. Though this was my first introduction to the world of makeup, ironically the other day I found myself equally baffled when looking at this picture of Veronica Webb as I was in that stinkin' junior high bathroom a decade ago. How does she do it?!?!? Resembling a porcelain doll back from no less than a week in St. Tropez, Veronica's face is so fresh I mildly craved a garden salad. And a bottle of Evian.

I immediately knew my that if I ever was to attain that level of feigned flawlessness, I was going to need some of the best products Georgetown Sephora had to sell. So I set out with my list:

#1- I.D. BareMinerals Foundation Powder

#2- Christian Dior Diorshow Mascara

#3- M.A.C. Lipglass in Clear

#4- CARGO Bronzer in Coral Beach

I had owned or at least used all of these items at one point or another and absolutely loved them, so I knew they'd be my best bets for Veronica appeal. I grabbed my keys, my bag, my wallet...my wallet...wait, my wallet...I was nearly broke! Since I live in a never ending college crisis financial crunch, I had no idea how I let the excitement of Veronica Webb's face remove me from the current and usual reality of my low cash flow. Still, I was determined. If anyone was going to look as glow-y as Veronica besides Veronica herself, it was me! No way was I going to let my lack in the "dolla dolla bills" keep from my beauty dreams.

Standing in my room with my coat half on, my goal half shot, and my brain one though away from contemplating liquor store robbery, I recalled an episode of Tyra where they discussed that some cheap versions of popular cosmetic formulas are actually comparable to the expensive brands. Going back to my middle school memory bank for the second time in one day, I thought of the drugstore makeup brands that never put me over my $30 allowance yet ensured I'd get at least one dance during 6th grade school dance. Making a mental note, I ran off to CVS and came back with the following alternatives:

#1- L'Oreal Bare Naturale Powdered Mineral Foundation

#2- L'Oreal Original Voluminous Mascara in Black

#3- Wet n' Wild Glassy Gloss in Clear

#$- Bonne Bell Glimmer Bronze Bronzer in Sun Kissed

Yeah, I know I did a major throwback with the Bonne Bell and Wet n' Wild, but a (broke) material gurl had to do what a (broke) material gurl had to do. And actually, the results haven't been half bad. For one, none of the formulas for any of these products are very heavy, so I don't really look like I'm wearing make-up. Though the Bonne Bell bronzer is in slight excess with the glitter, it provides a nice, overall highlighting effect to my cheek and brow bones. The L'Oreal powder is less "shimmery" than the Bare Minerals version, however I welcome the slightly matte composition given the already shimmery Bonne Bell bronzer. As with the L'Oreal mascara, I have always loved this particular brand and it comes in a very close second to Dior. You have to use more coats with L'oreal's formula in order to get the Dior effect, however for the price and similarities, I might keep the L'oreal mascara in stock just in case. For Wet n' Wild, I think M.A.C. may have a run for their money. Seriously. It's just as "wet", just as sticky, and for the most part stays on just as long. I think I may never go back...

So, as a whole, when I get some dough I would love to have my first choice cosmetics. But for under $30 at CVS and the ability to produce virtually the same look, I think I'll just stay fresh faced and frugal, for now.

~Courtney

Psst...

...the following is evidence of a completely top secret, unfinished project that you are going to bare witness to. Though we admit to be lip- smacking, gloss wielding, several tube toting makeup freaks, we're coming to you completely objective with this one. Not only is Lorac just a phenomenal brand as it is, the colors of this gloss are just as whimsical as the look of the bottle. Not bad for women who need everything to be fab. And hey, if your boyfriend hassles you about buying yet another thing of "lip stuff" (as he would put it), pull it out of your purse and say, "Does this look like lip gloss to you? I didn't think so, thank you very much..."

...and give him a big, sticky kiss ;-)

MG Spotting

Looky, Looky what we have here...our first Material Gurl spotting!!!

In none other than the grim atmosphere of the 3rd ave subway station, we find Camille radiating her fresh style even though it's the wee hours of the morning. With it's bright lights, soaring buildings, and street vendors who all seem to have that hot item that hasn't quite been released yet (hmm...), it's very difficult for a true Material Gurl not to crave the Big Apple every once in awhile. Amal and I are, well, insatiable to say the least, however; we managed to satisfy our New York deprivation by venturing to America's great city last weekend. You can never really see all of NYC (especially not in the 72 hours allotted to us) but we did manage to race through Union Square, Greenwich Village, Korea Town, Lower East Side, Soho, Harlem, and Midtown in no particular order. Some of our highlights included the absolutely, divinely delicious Sylvia's of Harlem, Korean BBQ cuisine, and the spectacle in itself known as Canal Street. And no, we didn't buy any knock offs. Surprisingly enough, given that we are Material Gurls, we didn't come away with any new material possessions after our trip. In the beginning, I would have blamed our luck on New York's immoral price inflation for vintage clothing (remember when old clothes were, you know, cheaper than new ones...?) but upon returning home, I realized we came home an experience way more valuable than anything we could have bought. During our brief stay in New York, we saw the skyline. We woke up to a snow storm and watched the fluffy white settle delicately over the highest of high rises. We rode trains like true natives and hailed cabs like Carrie Bradshaw. We reminisced on the days when we dreamed of what NYC would be like, and we renewed our hopes for all of the things we wish to accomplish for when we come back. We allowed the movement of the city to recharge our own spirits and we brought a load of inspiration back in our hearts. Last weekend, we left NYC, but NYC I don't think will ever really leave us.

The Beginning

It's funny how some nights end. Still elated from the party, hopeful for tommorow night's adventures, and dog-tired from sky high stilletos, there's nothing like a happy ending after partying with your girls on a summer's night. When looking at this picture it's easy to see how the ending of such a night is showcased; however, we bring you this real-life moment to help explain the very beginning...the beginning of our company "Material Gurl" and the M. Gurl Life blog. Material Gurl seeks to reach young women who follow and desire the "natural" trend, yet don't necessarily want to be categorized as having "hippie-like" sensibilities. The name itself initially implies a materialistic, shallow woman, however that is not the case with our brand at all. Our consumer knows what she wants in terms of quality of the food she eats, the clothes she wears, and the entertainment she seeks; however, below the surface Material Gurl represents the natural, healthy, luxurious materials that literally make our products such wonderful items. The M. Gurl Life blog is the reflection of our brand's philosophy and the celebration of the lifestyles of all the chic women who use our stuff. We love you all just as much as you love our beauty products, and this blog is to be an homage to you. We know not all of you are Hollywood actresses, Fashion Week runway models, or dangerously spoiled celebutantes...and that's fine, because neither are we. We're real women just like you who create great products for all of DC, Howard U, and everywhere abroad to experience. So, whether you're crashing parties and stumbling in at 3 am (see pic above), or doing your best to remain true to yourself (see face in the mirror), M. Girl Life is all about you. And this post starts the beginning. Check us out from here on as we provide you with inside peeks to the M. Gurl Lives of us, the creators of Material Gurl; lots of other "Material Gurls" we meet along the way, and trés chic discussion on topics that we all can relate to. If you love our products and think your daily happenings are a M. Girl Life fit, then drop us a line at info@materialgurlbeauty.com .
